Your Travel Story Day by Day
This carefully curated itinerary takes you across West and East Sumba, uncovering natural wonders and cultural treasures along the way. Each day brings a new highlight—from swimming in turquoise lagoons and exploring traditional villages to chasing sunsets on pristine beaches and marveling at iconic Sumbanese landscapes.
Welcome to Sumba! Upon arrival at Tambolaka Airport (TMC), meet your driver-guide and head to Manola Traditional Village, a hilltop settlement where daily life is carried out traditionally amidst warm local hospitality. From here, continue to Mananga Aba Beach, a long stretch of golden sand and the perfect spot to catch your first Sumba sunset. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.
After breakfast, set out to explore the Kodi area. Start at the turquoise Weekuri Lagoon, a natural saltwater pool separated from the sea by rocky cliffs, ideal for swimming and relaxation. Enjoy your lunch box at Mandorak Beach, a postcard-perfect cove with white sand framed by two dramatic cliffs facing each other.
Continue to Ratenggaro Village, one of Sumba’s most iconic traditional villages, where towering thatched houses and ancient megalithic tombs stand against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean. In the late afternoon, head to Pero Beach, a stunning coastal spot famous for its breathtaking sunsets. Return to Tambolaka for dinner and overnight stay.
Check out from the hotel after breakfast and head to Waikelo Sawah, a natural spring cave that irrigates wide rice fields. A short walk leads to Weekacura River, a peaceful stream in the middle of rice paddies, perfect for a refreshing dip.
After lunch in Waikabubak, visit Prai Ijing Village, a traditional settlement with unique high-roofed houses and megalithic tombs, offering a glimpse into Sumba’s cultural legacy. In the afternoon, travel east to Wairinding Hills, where rolling savannas glow golden at sunset—a landscape so cinematic it was featured in the film The Golden Cane Warrior. Continue to Waingapu, the capital of East Sumba, for hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight stay.
Today’s adventure begins at Tanggedu Waterfall, often called the “Grand Canyon of East Sumba” for its unique rock formations and natural pools surrounded by greenery. Swim, relax, and enjoy this hidden gem of Sumba.
Next, head to Puru Kambera Beach, where stretches of white sand meet wide-open savannas, often dotted with wild horses grazing freely. Conclude the day at Walakiri Beach, famous for its pygmy mangroves that create enchanting silhouettes during sunset. Dinner and overnight stay in Waingapu.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and transfer to Waingapu Airport (WGP) for your onward flight.
Goodbye Sumba—until next time!
